Why Google wanted YouTube to be Sued

“No matter how you spun it, a lawsuit was waiting to pounce on YouTube. And when the lawsuit came, it would be from multi-billion dollar media conglomerates. Worst of all, people feared it will trigger a landslide of more lawsuits. And even still, Google bought YouTube. Now I wonder, maybe Google actually wanted to be sued.”

This article raises some questionable points. Why would a company WANT to get sued? It puts a great drain on company resources and keeps the company from concentrating on projects that build more wealth for the company.

On the other hand, the lawsuit (like many of the infamous lawsuits you hear about in the Hollywood realm) generates free press and PR. Negative or positive, it generates attention for Google and YouTube. ALSO, having Google back YouTube now somewhat protects investors from fleeing from YouTube in fear of the said lawsuits. It’s sorta like going to battle with a huge army backing you… Google will slug it out in the courts and (most likely) will retain YouTube along with its rich, rich treasure trove of video content and users.

I think if Google hadn’t bought YouTube, YouTube would have crumbled under the massive litigation burdens that lie ahead.

It’s symbiotic. Google needs YouTube for its massive amounts of video content and critical mass of users… something they could not do on their own (remember when Google first came out with Google Video?) The lawsuits were just the string attached to this new relationship.
