Online Photo Scrapbooking with Flickr

Looking for a fun thing to add to your blog? Try Online Photo-Scrapbooking. You don’t even have to have your own photos. flickr.com has thousands of active photographers, each with an aesthetic eye from the sublime to the eccentric. Many of these photographers have consented their works to the public domain (i.e., allowed people to include their photos in personal blogs). Just set up a flickr account (it’s free) by signing up for a Yahoo! ID, or use your existing Yahoo! ID.
When you’ve logged in, you can configure your account to allow posts to your personal blog. Flickr supports a variety of blog formats, including Blogger, Live Journal, Wordpress, etc. Cofigure your posting template/style and you’re ready to go!
Next, start browsing the albums online or search for specific photos using keywords or “tags”. Tags are self appointed labels and categories suggested by the photographer. My suggestion is to explore their “most interesting” photos of the day. Interestingness is a flickr catch-all term for photos of interest for the day.
When you’ve found a photo that catches your eye, blogging it is as easy as a click away. Those photos which have given permissions for blogging have a button along the top of the photo labeled: “Blog This”… which then takes you to a screen where you can create a blog title and post to include with the photo. Blog posting via Flickr supports html tags so tag away when you draft your post.
You don’t need to write much. Sometimes posting the picture by itself adds a thousand words to your blog as it is
I have a sample blog on wordpress.com. I really dig cityscapes and urban scenes so I devoted an online scrapbook to collecting pictures from Flickr which fit this theme. You can view my scrapbook at The Urbanite. Sometimes I write a blurb or two about my impressions of the picture or what thoughts come to mind when I look at a specific shot. It’s like going to a museum or gallery… snapshot after snapshot. Give it a try! Happy Blogging!
